Workshop: Educating the Global Citizen in Scotland: Ideals and Realities

Diana Ellis, IDEAS/ WOSDEC, UK
Neil Scott, Clyde Primary School, Glasgow, UK

This workshop will involve a group discussion with Scottish organisations and practitioners in citizenship education. Education for Global Citizenship is one of the priorities of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, through the overarching national framework of Learning for Sustainability (LfS). The workshop will explore the meaning attributed to the concept of Global Citizenship by practitioners and schools. We will then consider how Scottish schools are increasingly using the Sustainable Development Goals as a context for developing the skills, values and attitudes of Global Citizenship.
Practitioners from different sectors of Scottish education will share their experience of developing the skills of Global Citizenship in practice. We will also discuss the tensions that the current national and international geo-political challenges pose to these pedagogies. Contributors represent a wide spectrum of the Scottish educational field and include NGOs working on Global citizenship education, independent school, primary and secondary comprehensive schools in Glasgow.
