Panel in cooperation with the Zentrum für Liberale Moderne/ Center for Liberal Modernity, Berlin

Covid19 and Climate Change are global challenges, deeply affecting human security and raising questions about the sustainability of our current economic and cultural patterns. Is a shutdown of the economy, along with restrictions on mobility and a disruption of global value chains – as we have witnessed during the COVID-19-pandemic – a role model for fighting the climate-crisis? How can the much-needed sharp reduction of greenhouse-gases go along with economic growth? Is the pandemic a turning point for our lifestyles as for the transformation of the economy?
Most actors seem to agree that fundamental change in doing business and dealing with nature are necessary. But how can we achieve those changes? In this panel we will discuss different perspectives and search for common ground.

  • How to transform the society and its economy (fast)
  • Will the COVID-crisis become a catalysator for change?
  • What is the role of the state (Big Government / protective state)?
  • Degrowth or Green Growth?
  • The European Green Deal and its global impact
  • What is the strength of the liberal democracy? Or is a technocratic government or emergency state needed?
  • What is the role of social movements and activism in societal change?
  • Will liberal democracy prevail the authoritarian challenge by China and others?
