Sustainability, Democracy and the Arts – Cultural and Artistic Responses to Environmental Change II with the Goethe Institute, the Prince Claus Fund, the Federal Agency for Civic Education, Arko Datto (Artist, Curator and Educator, Kolkata), Marta Andreu (Lecturer, Consultant and Filmmaker, Barcelona), Frederic Hanusch (Scientific Coordinator, Panel on Planetary Thinking, University of Giessen), Boris Jokić (Social Scientist, Institute for Social Research Zagreb/ NECE Advisory Board) & Maya El Khalil (Independent Curator, Oxford)

Rivers across the world suffer from pollution and exploitation, which threatens their ecosystems and the communities who rely upon them for survival. The Ganges Delta spans Bangladesh and West Bengal and is the world’s largest delta. It is home to the Sunderbans, the world’s largest contiguous halophytic mangrove forest. Currently, three-fourths of the delta is at risk due to human-induced climate change. In his project, “Shunyo Raja,” the photographer Arko Datto documents the inhabitants of this ever-changing environment. The documentary film “From the River” focuses on the Atrato River in Colombia, which the country’s constitutional court granted rights in 2017. Conceived by five Colombian filmmakers who took part in the “Residencias Walden” residency program under Marta Andreu’s guidance, this creative collective documentary explores how nature can be approached and filmed as subject rather than object.

In this panel, Datto and Andreu talk with Frederic Hanusch, Boris Jokić and Maya El Khalil about the role art can play in the discussion about climate change.

The workshop is part of a series of workshops organized by the Goethe-Institut and the Prince Claus Fund in the context of this year’s NECE activities. Three events, as well as a digital exhibition curated by Maya El Khalil that will be previewed during the conference, present global cultural initiatives that address pressing environmental issues. These activities are part of the Goethe-Institut and the Prince Claus Fund’s joint funding initiative: Cultural and Artistic Responses to Environmental Change. The sessions bring into dialogue artists, practitioners in the field of civic education and experts on climate change and democracy. By connecting leading figures who are driving the conversation on environmental and social justice, the workshop create a multidisciplinary network of solidarity and exchange. The Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest, is threatened by deforestation, fires and extraction. The Ecuadorian photographer Misha Vallejo spent over three years documenting and collaborating with the Kichwa people of Sarayaku, who live in the Ecuadorian Amazon. He chronicled their efforts to protect the Kawsak Sacha, the Living Forest while fighting for their rights. In this workshop, he will present his project “Secret Sarayaku” consisting of an interactive website and a photobook. Together with Frederic Hanusch, Sarah de Lange and Bertan Selim, Vallejo will discuss his work as well as the role artistic projects can play in the fight for climate justice and positive social change.

Once upon today… during the Corona pandemic with Ole Jantschek, Ana Sidon, Reili Reintal, Jolanta Steciuk and Carolin Wenzel (Ev. Trägergruppe für gesellschaftspolitische Jugendbildung)

„Once upon today… in Europe“ is a project that approaches issues of belonging, identity and historical narratives from a diversity-aware perspective. Since 2012 it has brought together participants from seven countries in international trainings, workshops and youth meetings. Over the course of the project, a variety of new methods has been developed. Building on these experiences, we would like to invite participants to share their experiences during the Corona pandemic in an interactive online workshop while getting to know some of our tools. EU Citizenship – What it is and what it could be with Ulrike Guerot, Founder of the European Democracy Lab (Berlin/Vienna), Leona Bashow, Human Rights Lawyer (Manchester) and Joshua Silver, Professor of Physics (Oxford/Avignon). The discussion will be facilitated by Alexandra von Westernhagen, EU lawyer (Brussels/London).

‘EU citizenship: What it is and what it could be’ Is a lunch session during which we will focus on a little-known but decisive feature of the European peace and integration project – EU citizenship. Participants will express what EU citizenship means to them, and what experiences they have made when exercising related rights. We will in particular provide the floor for nationals of the UK who have supposedly ‘lost’ their EU citizenship with the UK’s exit from the EU at the end of January 2020.

Finally, we will feature some of the personal stories of our upcoming booklet on ‘EU citizenship – what it means and what it could be’ – we hope to include your story as well!

Fostering democratic citizenship via e-learning with Siarhei Salei, Helga Menik and Viorica Olaru (Hrodna Regional Association of Young Intellectuals VIT, Belarus, EENCE Network)

As a response to limitations for professional development and professional contacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic educators from formal and non-formal educational settings representing EENCE region (six Eastern partnership countries and Russia) are provided with online tools (four online courses) addressing contemporary challenges in teaching history and human rights in the context of civic education tailored to local needs. During the small panel event our team will present project concept, format as well as interim outcomes and will be open to answer the questions from the audience.

Teaching global issues in the classroom. Active subject-oriented approach in global citizenship education with Anna Wojtych (Center for Citizenship Education)

Global citizenship education, or global learning, is gradually finding its way into schools. To encourage teaching GCE, an innovative methodology of embedding global learning topics into subject lessons has been developed. This approach ensures systematic appearance of global topics in the classroom in line with the curricula. The workshop aims to give the participants an insight into the ready-to-use sets of lesson plans that embed global issues such as climate change, gender equality or migrations into subject curricula for pupils aged 10+. It will be held by experienced educators and teachers involved in creating and testing the methodology within the ‘Global Issues – Global Subjects’ project (www.bit.ly/GIGSpro).

Young Mediterranean Citizens Workshop (AJCM) with Delphine Salvi and Samir Khebizi (Les Têtes de l’Art)

The Workshop of Young Citizens of the Mediterranean is open to young people aged 15 to 30. Its aim is to provide a space for dialogue around the topics of ecology, civic engagement, eco-development, gender equality and Mediterranean such as European identity. Since 2014, more than 4000 youngsters engage as citizen actors of the Mediterranean have been proposing concerted initiatives to act collectively. All the exchanges between those young people grow thanks to the current use of digital tools during the COVID period, ending in a 3 days Festivals. In this workshop we’ll share the results of this program and at the same time propose to share a co-creation workshop shaped on the AJCM way.
